Claudia Lenz

Research Professor

Claudia Lenz's work and research areas include:

  • Prejudice and group enmity
  • Memory culture, historical politics, and historical consciousness
  • Democracy and citizenship in schools

At The Norwegian Holocaust Center, she has previously been involved in research projects Jødisk liv i dagens Norge (Negotiating Jewish Identity) and Skiftende grenser (Shifting Boundaries. Definitions, Expressions and Consequences of Antisemitism in Contemporary Norway), where she has studied the attitudes of Jews and Muslims towards each other and how the boundaries of what is perceived as legitimate criticism of Israel have changed since the Gaarder debate in 2006.

She has been part of the project group behind the holdningsundersøkelsene (attitude surveys) on attitudes towards Jews and Muslims from 2011 to 2022, and in 2022 was responsible for the youth survey.

In her research on memory culture related to World War II, the Holocaust, and the events of July 22, Lenz focuses on how memory and the processing of the past contribute to the development and negotiation of identity, participation, and power relations at both individual and group levels.

As a member of the Dembra project and the leader of Dembra for teacher educators, she is also concerned with how schools can prevent group-hostile attitudes.
