Omer Bartov is regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on the Holocaust and genocide, and is Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University. His research was central in demonstrating that not only the SS, but also the regular German army, the Wehrmacht, actively participated in the Holocaust. Since the 2000s, he has helped foreground victims’ histories as a central focus of Holocaust research. In recent years, he has questioned how Holocaust memory is used today and warned that it risks losing its universal significance when drawn into current political conflicts.
The Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies (HL-senteret) and the University of Oslo invite you to a conversation with Bartov about the future of Holocaust memory. The conversation will be moderated by Peder Nustad, head of Dembra (HL-senteret). Nikolai Melamed Kleivan, journalist at Morgenbladet, and Nina Grünfeld, film director, author and professor at University of Inland Norway, will participate in the discussion.
The event is part of the series In the Shadow of the War – The Road Ahead, a collaboration between the Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies and the University of Oslo, with support from the Fritt Ord Foundation.
