Antisemitism and anti-Muslim racism in Norway 2025-2027

In the period 2025–2027, the Norwegian Center for Holocaust and Minority Studies is carrying out a comprehensive research project on antisemitism and hostility toward Muslims in contemporary Norway. The project builds on previous surveys (conducted since 2011), but includes several new components.

Important questions include which central drivers antisemitic and anti-Muslim prejudices have in today’s society, and in which parts of the population they are most widespread. Among other things, we will examine more closely the significance of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict for manifestations of antisemitism. One sub-study will look at the characteristics and consequences of conspiracy mentality. We will also map experiences and attitudes among Jews and Muslims. The results will show developments since 2022. The project consists of four quantitative and three qualitative studies:

• A survey of attitudes in a representative sample of the adult population

• A survey of attitudes among young people

• A survey of experiences and attitudes among Jews and Muslims

The three qualitative studies will be conducted through in-depth interviews with Jews and Muslims, as well as group interviews with young people aged 16–19.

The project is funded by the Ministry of Labour and Inclusion, the Ministry of Children and Families, the Ministry of Local Government and Districts, the Ministry of Culture and Equality, and the Ministry of Education. The Ministry of Culture and Equality is the coordinating ministry.

The project will be completed in December 2027. The project leader is Vibeke Moe
